A separation composting toilet works on a simple principle: keeping liquids strictly separate from solids. In their natural state, urine and faeces do not smell strongly straight away, but when mixed together they block oxygen and trigger anaerobic fermentation, which is the source of unpleasant odours. Separation eliminates this problem at source. Composting toilets are eco-friendly dry toilet systems that convert human waste into natural fertiliser through a biological decomposition process, without requiring a connection to the water or sewerage network. Solid waste is collected in a sealed tank. After each use, it is covered with a carbon-rich material (such as sawdust, peat, wood chips or coconut fibre) which absorbs excess liquid, neutralises odours and creates the air pockets essential for the aerobic process.
